spam

I get a lot of spam.

I don’t mean just good mail that I don’t necessarily want.

I mean real spam: emails that are sent to me from no one about nothing for seemingly no reason whatsoever.

Every morning I find myself working my way through deleting the spam in my inbox.

Look – I’m not as naïve as you think.

I’ve tried every spam blocker that I can think of.

I’ve tried moving the messages to the spam folder.

I’ve tried changing my email accounts.

I’ve finally come to the most obvious conclusion:

Spam is a part of life.

Whether you ask for it or not, and no matter how hard you try to limit it, the fact is that your life is in danger of spam attack.

I’m not talking about emails anymore.

I’m talking about your real life.

In the course of your day, you will be spammed.

People will say things you never wanted to hear.

They will throw darts your way that you never intended to receive.

In some cases, the spam will be meant specifically for you.

But in other cases, you will simply be the innocent bystander of a random spam attack.

Here’s what Paul warns about spam in 2 Corinthians 11:3: “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”

Well, OK – Paul may not have used the actual word “spam”, but I have a feeling that spam is exactly what he meant:

Words that attack your mind, impacting your thoughts and making you wonder….does God really love me?

Circumstances that threaten to shake your faith causing you to ask…..does God really care about me?

People that seem to go straight to your jugular in your moment of weakness causing you to ponder…..does God really see me?

Yeah….that’s the spam I’m talking about, and chances are, spam is coming your way today.

See, spam is a part of life.

So today, when you feel spammed, don’t be deceived.

What you do with your spam may well determine the measure and depth of your love for Christ.

Instead – guard your heart, and your eyes, and your ears.

And when you detect even a glimmer of a spam attack, don’t allow the garbage to linger, don’t wallow in self-pity, don’t believe the lies.

Simply press delete and move on.

Life is too short and the stakes too high to waste another minute on unwanted spam.

Don’t you agree?
